The purpose of this study is to investigate empirically the medical use of private health insurance subscribers by health status. It will help to establish the rational role of private medical insurance and national health insurance, which is being discussed recently. This study used data from 22,160 people from Korea Medical Panel integrated data from 2011 to 2016. As a research method, analysis of variance(ANOVA) was used along with time series regression analysis.
As a result of analysis, the medical use(;outpatient visits, total outpatient medical expenses, inpatient use, inpatient days, and total inpatient expenses) of private health insurance subscribers is positive(+) effected by gender, age, economic activity, income, number of private medical insurance, premiums paid, sickness, and activity limitation. and subjective health status had negative effects.
There were statistically significant differences in the number of outpatient visits, total outpatient medical expenses, hospitalizations, hospitalization days, and total hospital expenses among the health status of private health insurance subscribers. In case of poor health, medical use was high in both outpatient and hospitalization. These results suggest that Bonus-Malus System in Private Health Insurance will have a negative impact on the health vulnerable.
